The Steamship Authority

EBDG has supported The Steamship Authority with design of two of their passenger vehicle ferries, the single-ended WOODS HOLE and the double-ended ISLAND HOME. The WOODS HOLE was built by Conrad Shipyard and delivered in 2016 while the ISLAND HOME was built by VT Halter and delivered in 2007.

EBDG’s Scope

WOODS HOLE

EBDG completed a detailed functional design package, provided bid support as well as construction oversight services.

ISLAND HOME

Scope of work included the design study report, concept design, preliminary design, contract design, and construction supervision at the shipyard.  This multiple phase project included styling and visibility studies which looked at single and double pilothouse alternatives with contemporary and traditional styling.  EBDG also conducted a propulsion study which compared various operational scenarios.  Following the preliminary design, EBDG also witnessed the model testing.

Design Features

WOODS HOLE

The vessel was designed for both short-haul service between Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven and the significantly longer and more exposed service to Nantucket.  This single-ended vessel features enhanced maneuverability with controllable pitch propellers, high lift rudders and a bow thruster. The passenger deck has convenient walk-on access, as well as comfortable interior spaces.

ISLAND HOME

By working closely with the client, this vessel is a blend of SSA tradition, new technology, and modern amenities.  A "quiet room" provides riders a tranquil area for working or relaxing, and a snack bar and dining area offer food service.  Two elevators permit access to all passenger decks for mobility-impaired riders.  The enclosed vehicle deck offers protection from the steep chop frequently encountered on the seven-mile crossing and includes two lift decks, allowing a total automobile capacity of up to 80 vehicles in seven car lanes.  Design operating speed is 16 knots, permitting hourly departures from Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard.
