North Carolina DOT
EBDG has supported North Carolina DOT with naval architecture and marine engineering services for their fleet of vessels since 2007. Over the years, EBDG has provided design services for three classes of vessels for NCDOT – the Sound Class, River Class and a high-speed catamaran class. EBDG engineers have conducted extensive shipyard support services including inspection services and trial attendance. Other task assignments have included performing deadweight surveys, deck loading calculations, and stability assessments for their ferries.
Sound Class
EBDG designed a 200’ single-ended Sound Class ferry to service the 2-hour Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island and the Swan Quarter to Ocracoke runs. Two vessels, the SWAN QUARTER and SEA LEVEL have been built and delivered to this design. The vessel's hull has been specially designed to reduce pitching and breaking waves and spray to provide for greater passenger comfort. Overnight accommodations for a crew of six are provided onboard.
The Sound Class ferries have a carrying capacity of 300 passengers and 50 vehicles.
River Class
EBDG designed a 183’ double-ended River Class ferry to operate in shallow water. One vessel, the RODANTHE, has been built and delivered to this design. For this project, scope of services included preliminary design, contract design, model testing supervision, CFD analysis, bid support and owner's representation during construction.
EBDG completed a modified River Class design featuring azimuthing drive and diesel-electric propulsion. Two vessels, the AVON and SALVO have been built and delivered to this design. For the project, EBDG provided preliminary design, contract design, computation fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for hull shape, bid support and owner's representation during construction including detail design review related to structure, mechanical, electrical and propulsion systems. EBDG reviewed steel fabrication, weld procedures and provided on-site inspection of welding and construction processes.
The River Class ferries have a carrying capacity of 300 passengers and 40 vehicles.
High-Speed Catamaran Class
EBDG designed a 92’ high-speed aluminum hull ferry. One vessel, the OCRACOKE EXPRESS, has been built and delivered to this design. EBDG's scope of services included concept design, contract design, model testing supervision, bid support and owner's representation during construction. Under separate contracts, EBDG completed the structural lofting for this vessel as well as the floating dock to support this ferry.
The high-speed catamaran class has a carrying capacity of 100 passengers.
