Multi-Purpose Vessels
EBDG has a proven track record in designing versatile multi-purpose vessels tailored to diverse operational needs. Our designs include the FIRE ISLAND MAID, a 70-foot vehicle ferry with a steel hull, hydraulic ramp, and reinforced deck capable of supporting heavy equipment, as well as the MANU’ATELE, a 140-foot vessel designed for the transport of passengers, fuel, and freight between the Samoan Islands. These vessels highlight EBDG’s expertise in delivering durable, functional designs that meet rigorous regulatory standards while supporting a variety of cargo and passenger services.
70’ Multi-Purpose Vessel
EBDG provided the contract design for a 70' x 24' multi-purpose vehicle ferry for Fire Island Ferries. The vessel, named FIRE ISLAND MAID, was built at Metal Shark. EBDG's scope of services included a structural and stability package for US Coast Guard submission, contract design and arrangement information for shipyard bids. EBDG also provided a 3D model with an exterior view rendering so the client could visualize the vessel during the design phase. During construction, EBDG provided oversight services to Fire Island Ferries.
The ferry features a steel hull and aluminum superstructure and is equipped with a hydraulic ramp for loading and unloading heavy equipment. The reinforced deck is capable of supporting fully loaded concrete trucks and general cargo up to 100,000 pounds. The aft pilot house accommodates two crew and up to six passengers (assumed to be in their vehicles).
The ferry is powered by twin Cummins QSL9 Tier 3 marine engines with ZF Marine CruiseCommand control system and Twin Disc transmissions. Electrical power is provided by a Cummins Onan MDK generator.
