Fisher Island Community Association

EBDG has supported Fisher Island Community Association with marine engineering and naval architecture services since 1981 when their vessels the EAGLE and PELICAN were constructed. Since then we designed the HERON and provided contract design for this sleek 152' x 52' passenger vehicle ferry. Four vessels of this design are in operation, the EAGLE II, PELICAN II, OSPREY and SEAHAWK, all built at St. John’s Ship Building.

EBDG’s Scope

EBDG was selected by Fisher Island Community Association to do a complete review and recommendation for the overhaul of the Fisher Island's transportation system. Within the fleet renewal study, EBDG surveyed their four passenger vessels to identify vessel lifecycle costs through the remainder of their economic life and to identify areas of non-compliance with the Passenger Vessel Accessibility Guidelines. EBDG identified the factors that affect the transportation demand and the required level of service, highlighted the condition of the ferry fleet, identified planned changes to routes and terminals, and presented a basic operating model to estimate operating and capital costs for the next 20 years.

As a result of that project, EBDG was selected to design a new class of passenger/vehicle ferry for Fisher Island Community Association. EBDG provided contract design and a style study including 3D modeling and rendering services to ensure the appropriate aesthetics.

During construction EBDG provided construction supervision.

Design Features

The design features high-end details typically reserved for yachts such as flush inboard bulwarks, stainless steel bulwark details, underlit lounge seating, composite wood decks, and retractable awnings. Enclosed accommodations include three passenger lounges.

She is powered by a pair of Caterpillar C18 engines, each of 600 horsepower (450 kilowatts), at 1,800 rpm, coupled to Hundested CPG 38 gearboxes. The propulsion system is a mechanical system with controllable-pitch propellers (CPP), also from Hundested. EBDG chose a CPP to smooth out the engine loading during manoeuvring operations, which the vessel performs dozens of times a day on its short, technical route.
